The Cut

(Performed at Freak Train 4/25/05)

Freak Train is a free-form performance showcase at The Bug Theater in Denver. It happens the last Monday of every month. Strange artsy people and new performers get to have 5 minutes on stage to do whatever they want. It's great fun. You'll often find several members of the Red Yak universe at Freak Train.

On April 25th, 2005, six of us got up on stage and performed a piece "written" by Kirk called "The Cut". Below are pictures and a description.

The MC entered the stage, accompanied by a recorded trumpet fanfare. He was wearing a green dress and unfurled a white piece of fabric on the ground.

The MC was apparently unable to speak himself, but was assisted by his shadow, on stilts, who carried a boom box that held the MC's voice.

The MC introduced Sheldon and explained why Sheldon was wearing orange and why Sheldon had two pieces of bacon on his shoulders.

But the MC also explained that there were parts of Sheldon's life that had yet to be determined.

As if on cue, an audience member stood up with a sign asking for control of Sheldon's hair.

A helper appeared on stage wearing nothing but a jock strap.

The helper brought out three cards with potential hair cuts for Sheldon. They were:

#1 - The Bozo

#2 - The Mohawk

#3 - The Monk

Arguably, some of the helper's gyrations may have influenced the audience's choice.

Eventually, the audience got to vote by applause.

The helper danced around.

The audience chose #3 - The Monk.

A sexy hairstylist showed up on stage with some clippers.

As she began shaving off Sheldon's hair, Sheldon started to foam at the mouth.

The haircut wasn't going quite as fast as anyone had hoped. Sheldon had a lot of hair to cut off.

As time started to get down to the wire, the hairstylist started to chop off clumps of Sheldon's hair with scissors.

The MC's voice became dance music and his shadow started to dance. If you look closely, you can see that the shadow was actually jumping on his stilts.

The audience member reappeared on stage, only this time he was apparently an angel or something. His voice came booming out of the stage speakers. He sounded like a woman.

The angel had Sheldon stand.

The angel commended Sheldon for being willing to do as the audience had chosen.

Even though Sheldon's haircut was not done, the angel bid the audience to give him a round of applause.

They did.

The hairstylist continued to try to finish the haircut.

The players made their exit.

The hairstylist was still cutting Sheldon's hair.

The helper's butt was still naked.

This may be the image that the audience remembers most from this performance.

Even though Sheldonn's haircut was not finished on stage, he later emerged from backstage with a complete Monk haircut.

The audience applauded him greatly.

You can't see the haircut very well in this shot.

Oh, well.
