Night Ultimate

(Posted by Kirk 9/9/06)

I bought a light-up flying disc from the fine Boulder company, Flash Flight.

The disc is really impressive. It flies almost exactly like my favorite discs and it is the perfect brightness for tossing it around in the dark. It uses a watch battery that is really easy to find in stores everywhere. I guess the bottom line is that I love it. I even talked Darren into buying one.

But we knew there was more we could do that just play catch in the dark. The best thing would be to put together a night-time ultimate game. Flash Flight even sells personal light sets for just this purpose. But how were we going to convince 10-12 of our friends to shell out $6.50 for a game we might play once or twice?

So instead, I went and bought a bunch of glow necklaces online and a few light-sticks at Home Depot (for end-zone markers) and rounded up a few stalwart friends. Luckily, I've been playing ultimate with some really cool people and several of them were game for this experiment

So, at 9:00 on September 8th, 2006, we all met at a Denver park and played ultimate in the dark. It was a glorious time. People ran their legs off. We avoided any injuries, despite several near-collisions, many people stumbling in grassy depressions in the field, and three people carreening off some stairs that were way to close to the playing field.

Since we were playing, we didn't take any photos until afterward. Here they are:

This is a group photo without any flash. It's a pretty good approximation of what it looked like when we were playing (except more spread out).

There was a green team and a red team. The red necklaces dimmed quicker than the green ones.

The disc is in the upper left-hand of the photo.

With a flash, you can better see who played.

Back row: Disc, Darren, Rob, Lukas, Roger.

Front row: Kirk, Erin, Stefan, Robin, Carrie, Tobin.

I juggled the light-sticks, while Rob held the shutter open.

Finally, I tried to spell my name while Rob held the shutter open.

I did OK, I think.
